Precision Genomics Laboratory

The Precision Genomics Laboratory (PGL) is a partnership between the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology and the Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center to provide clinical-grade, high-throughput genomic sequencing. The laboratory is CLIA-certified and has adopted a quality management system to assess and continuously improve the delivery of services to meet the needs of patients.

PGL is committed to the culture of quality and safety, with periodic audits of laboratory operations for compliance with stated requirements. Laboratory management reviews all audit findings with the quality assurance committee of the Department of Pathology & Cell Biology and develops plans for improvement of operations with both the Department of Pathology & Cell Biology and IGM.

The overall aim is to maintain continuous improvement through anticipatory planning. Long-term strategic planning related to equipment, test volume, technology, staffing, and regulations is an integral part of the plan. The plan is designed to maintain compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, organizational policies, clinical professional standards, and ethical standards.

The Laboratory Director ensures that the program is coordinated with others in the institution and that the plan is implemented as designed. The Laboratory Director and Laboratory Owner are jointly and separately responsible for laboratory operations.

Mission Statement

PGL will provide clinical-grade, high-throughput genomic sequencing to serve Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (CUIMC-NYPH) patients (and beyond), the research community at CUIMC, and collaborators. PGL will aim to translate the university-wide Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI) into clinical practice, and will make every effort to engage and coordinate with other PMI efforts. As part of its mission, PGL will develop a clinical research program with the aim to provide high-quality training in NGS-based diagnostics for medical students, residents, and fellows.
